Chronic Cough

Chronic Cough

A chronic cough is a cough that lasts eight weeks or longer in adults, or four weeks in children. Unlike acute coughs, which are often due to temporary infections or irritants, chronic coughs are usually symptoms of an underlying condition. Common causes include:

Respiratory Conditions:

Asthma: Coughing may be triggered by cold air, exercise, or allergens.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Common in smokers, causing persistent cough with mucus.
Postnasal Drip: Excess mucus dripping from the nose to the throat can trigger coughing.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Stomach acid can back up into the throat, irritating it and causing a chronic cough.

Infections

Chronic Bronchitis: Often seen in smokers, with a productive cough that lasts a long time.
Tuberculosis: A serious lung infection that causes a long-term cough.
