Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep due to partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway. These interruptions, known as apneas, can happen dozens or even hundreds of times throughout the night, leading to poor sleep quality and reduced oxygen supply to the body. OSA is a serious condition that can lead to various health complications if left untreated.

Diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Medical History and Physical Exam

The doctor will inquire about symptoms, lifestyle, and risk factors, and may perform an exam focusing on the airway.

Polysomnography (Sleep Study)

This is the gold standard test for diagnosing OSA. A polysomnography records brain waves, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, breathing patterns, eye movements, and muscle activity during sleep. This test can be done in a sleep lab.

Home Sleep Apnea Test

For some patients, an at-home sleep study may be an option, which can monitor breathing patterns and blood oxygen levels during sleep.
